The Seventh Ecumenical Council attended by Patriach Trasios and hundreds of bishops was held in Little Hagia Sophia in 787 AD. The basilica was converted into a mosque after the conquest of Iznik during the Ottoman period and renovated later on by the architect Mimar Sinan.

Little Hagia Sophia, whose name means sacred wisdom according to Christian belief, was built in the form of a basilica with a rectangular layout and three naves.
